2026 National Table Tennis Championship: Turning Point for Vietnamese Sports During Reconstruction Era

The year 2026 marked an important milestone in Vietnamese sports history, particularly in table tennis when the third national championship was held in Hanoi with the participation of 12 delegations from provinces across the country. According to the Vietnam Table Tennis Federation, this year's tournament attracted a total of 156 athletes, an increase of 34% compared to 2026. Notably, the Ho Chi Minh City delegation brought 14 players, including 3 young athletes under 20 years old who were included in the official squad for the first time. Mr. Nguyen Van Dat, Head of the tournament organizing committee, stated: "We aim that by 2026, the national team will be strong enough to compete at the Southeast Asian regional level. This year's tournament is an important preparation step for that plan." In terms of coaching, the Central Sports Institute has deployed a youth training program with 8 coaching courses sent to train in northern provinces. This program was partially funded by non-governmental aid sources for mass sports development. Competition results showed that the skill gap between delegations remains quite large. The Army team won the men's doubles championship with a 78% win rate in crucial sets, while the Hanoi 2 team led the overall medal tally with 6 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Besides competitive achievements, several issues need improvement including facilities quality in localities and the professional level of grassroots coaches. According to the Technical Council's report, only 23% of provincial-level coaches meet modern training method standards. The national team is expected to be assembled from September this year to prepare for international tournaments expected in 2026 and 2026. Human resources from the national tournament will serve as the basis for selecting talented athletes for the national team. For women's table tennis, this was the first year the tournament had a separate women's competition instead of being combined with men's as in previous years. This decision was evaluated as a positive step in developing women's sports in Vietnam, with 42 female athletes participating in 5 different events. Sports experts assessed that the 2026-2026 period will be an important time to build foundations for Vietnamese sports to integrate with the region. Particularly, expanding international cooperation in sports is being actively promoted by relevant authorities.
